Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem of the possible. What does that mean? Well, take a look at these poems by Raena Shirali and Rachel Mennies. Both poems are squarely focused not on what has happened, or what will happen, but on what might happen if the conditions are right. Today, write a poem that emphasizes the power of “if,” of the woulds and coulds and shoulds of the world.
Here’s my list of ‘ifs’ and ‘woulds’
Poem: If…. If words were enough to transform this world Heaps of verses would everywhere be found If I hadn’t decided to quit, held on a little more My dreams would have changed the course of my life If I had a time machine to revisit my past I would erase whatsoever haunts me this time If I had the mettle to rise after each debilitating fall My certitude and resolve would paint the skies If I had heeded to my heart over pieces of advice I would be glistening with pride, content and delight If I had listened to your silence twenty years ago Our hearts wouldn’t be yearning, our nights wouldn’t await sunshine If life blessed me another precious chance I would gladly choose happiness over sacrifice If I could perceive others beyond their demeanor All relationships would stand the test of time If I could have all the answers to the questions that keep me awake I would sleep like a baby and welcome each day with a smile If I could surge above my anxieties and not submit to insecurities I would steer my destiny and this world would be mine ©Vandana Bhasin 06.04.2019
