The Enigma of Geometry

The Enigma of Geometry

African art is strongly influenced by its flora and fauna and its natural surroundings. African patterns fall into two categories- Geometric and Symbolic.

Geometric patterns use lines, curves, zigzags and spirals signifying that life is not linear and straightforward and involves many curves. Symbolic patterns use images that have some symbolic meaning for the artist. These images can include flowers, seeds, stars, crescent and trees. These represent the culture’s belief and history.

The artwork here is a fusion of the African art and Mandala. I have used African geometric patterns to create a mandala. Each ring has different patterns. The use of bright colors and unique patterns has made this artwork come alive!
