Dunkirk Spirit
This artwork is inspired by Kalamkari and Mandala.
The word ‘Kalamkari’ translates to ‘pen craft’ where ‘kalam’ means pen and ‘kari’ translates to work. This vibrant art dates back to over 3000 B.C. As per historians, cloth samples portraying Kalamkari art were discovered at the archaeological sites of Mohenjo-Daro. During the Mughal era, this style of painting gained massive recognition and during the 18th century, it was promoted as decorative artwork.
A mandala is a representation of the cosmos in a circular pattern that leads to a central point. The term mandala translates to “circle (mandal)” in Sanskrit. In most cultures, the circle is a symbol of oneness or wholeness, of a new beginning and a state of completion or end.
This artwork has been created using motifs of Kalamkari art as patterns for the rings of the mandala. At the core of the mandala, is an elephant, which is a significant element of Kalmakari as elephants are considered sacred symbols of peace, power, and physical and mental strength that bring good luck and prosperity. Their presence alone exudes authority and confidence- a strength that is deeply rooted and evident in their giant stature.
As an artist, using my creativity to combine these two art forms was a sign of growth for me. This one will always hold a special place in my heart.
