Haibun: Peak

Today is the first day of NaPoWriMo 2017 and I have tried to write a new form called Haikun, keeping in line with the early bird prompt provided by NaPoWriMo (though I am not early :)). Haibun is a Japanese literary form that combines a small prose with a haiku possibly using autobiographical bits and pieces as base content for the journey. This genre permits an author to express more than haiku via the addition of personal prose. The range of haibun is broad and frequently includes autobiography, diary, prose poem, short story and travel journal.

The snow-white clouds enveloped the mountains like a mother embracing her child. I wondered if mountains were soaring high to reach the sky or the sky had condescended to cherish the beauty of the colossal mass of rock. I had read about the glory and magnificence of the highest snow-clad peak on earth but witnessing it with my own eyes was an enigmatic experience altogether. I had resolved to climb Mount Everest after living eight blessed years on this bountiful planet I proudly call Mother Earth. And here I am, exactly ten years after taking my pledge, breathing life into my most treasured dream and deliberating if this moment was worth the years of sweat and effort!
