ALS NaPoWriMo Day Prompt 29:
We all feel threatened by storms of failures and challenges, but there’s always a lesson hidden in them. Write a poem seeking inspiration from these words of Paulo Coelho – “Not all storms come to disrupt your life; some come to clear your path.”
The villanelle is a highly structured poem made up of five tercets followed by a quatrain, with two repeating rhymes and two refrains.
The first and third lines of the opening tercet are repeated alternately in the last lines of the succeeding stanzas; then in the final stanza, the refrain serves as the poem’s two concluding lines. Using capitals for the refrains and lowercase letters for the rhymes, the form could be expressed as: A1 b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 A2.
Poem: A Memo from God
No matter your state, I stand by you,
Trust, you may have lost in me,
But my child, how can I ever abandon you?
You may be terrified to start anew,
For all you now wish is to vanish, to flee,
No matter your state, I stand by you
The world your eyes see, is a spurious view,
Devoid of empathy, forbidding you to be free,
But my child, how can I ever abandon you?
The storms you faced tested your value,
For tenacity and mettle, I heard your plea,
No matter your state, I stand by you
From caves of adversity, one shines to be true
For pain is the light on the path of glee,
But my child, how can I ever abandon you?
Trust yourself, for I’m a part of you,
Resilient I created you as depth of sea,
No matter your state, I stand by you,
For my child, how can I ever abandon you?
